What Is Our Christian Hope in 2023?

Let’s dream a little.  Imagine, if you will, that our nation begins a dramatic shift toward righteousness in 2023. There is nationwide repentance and a renewed commitment to Christ among His people. Human dignity becomes more than a slogan. The unborn are welcomed into life, racial and ethnic injustice is curtailed, marriage is recognized for what God intended it to be, and religious liberty is acknowledged as the cornerstone of all freedoms.

Government supports religious liberty.  Families grow strong and healthy. Economic opportunity and sound fiscal policy join to create widening prosperity. We remedy the drug crisis and criminal violence becomes the extreme exception to a socially peaceful norm.

Now, ask yourself this: Will such a place ever exist? And, if it does, will sin vanish? Will human nature, fallen and, as the prophet Jeremiah described it, “desperately sick” (Jeremiah 17:9), become sweet and full of light? And will the vision of America we have just considered be permanent?

The answer is that such imagine things are merely a dream. This thought-experiment is not intended to deflate hopes for a better nation. We should work and pray to advance those things that reflect God’s desire for America and the world.

Yet we are mistaken if we think there will ever be a final resolution to the problems we face or that the contentions of our time will one day be only a distant memory.

Human evil is to life in this world what water is to a sponge. It permeates all facets of our beings individually and collectively. This does not mean that everything is sordid and wicked. There is much good to celebrate in many areas of life.

And as followers of the Savior, we have a deep obligation to stand for those things He most values — the sacredness of human life and the justice and liberty that are each person’s God-ordained due. This means ongoing, persistent engagement with all spheres of public life.

However, we cannot forget that sin is both distortive and enduring. It promises and seduces, lying the whole time and turning good gifts into broken ones. For example, sexual intimacy is a great gift. In the context of the covenantal union of one man and one woman, it enables two to become one and provides new generations of God’s image-bearers. Yet from abortion to pornography to sexual abuse and more, what God planned for good man uses for selfishness and harm.  And therefore, we have come to live in the society that we have personally created for ourselves.

On a national scale, America’s great promise can and should be better realized, but perfection this side of heaven will never be our lot. Moreover, a culturally friendly Christianity should never be equated with godliness. Even if the United States were to embrace expressions of orthodox faith and if our cultural institutions — the media, the entertainment industry, public education, the business world, etc. — jettisoned their current allegiance to moral relativism and radical sexual autonomy, sin would remain observant and eager, ready to pounce in ways small and large.

Our goal is not an America that will never be. Nor can it be only a society where we feel at ease and unthreatened, luxuriating in the friendliness of our cultural surroundings. Such a place is inherently deceptive. It urges us to forget the crouching presence of sin and softens the sense of urgency compelled by the gospel.

But, nevertheless, we press on, preserving what little remains in the form of righteousness and goodness, always remembering with the writer of the Book of Hebrews that “here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come” (13:14).

For the sake of that city and its King, let’s move into 2023 with humble confidence in His eternal victory and a keen sense of our temporal duty to be His instruments here on earth.

Avoid The Trap of Unequally Yoke Marriages

"She is free to marry anyone she wishes—but he must belong to the Lord." 1 Corinthians 7:39

Every year on June 4, Joseph gives a book of poetry to his wife, Jane. They met in a poetry class in college when she had forgotten the assigned book one day and he loaned her his copy. June 4 is their wedding anniversary, and Joseph’s annual gift reminds them of how they met all those years ago.

Take care now on you make marital connections. You profess Christ as your Lord? You do well, therefore, don’t ever put yourself in a position where you begin to date a non-believer hoping that your witness will win him or her to Jesus!

Never consent to marry any one in opposition to the plain teachings of God's holy Word. Remember it was unequally yoke marriages between saints and sinners–which brought the Jews into such distress after their return from the Babylonian captivity. It was such a marriage that brought all the troubles of Samson upon him; and it was marrying with unconverted women that led away Solomon's heart from God. The strongest and wisest of men were thus overcome, and therefore you should also be on your guard.

Think of its effects on your own spirituality—of the consequence to your children—of the bad impression it makes on the world—and the mischief it introduces into the church. It is one of Satan's chief snares—one of his most powerful engines; therefore beware of it.  Don’t set yourself up for failure.

Settle it in your minds now; determine, in God's strength, that you never will yield to this temptation—to be unequally yoked with an unbeliever. A man must be intimately acquainted with the entire history of God's church from the beginning, and then he would require the arm of an angel, and the intellect of an archangel—to write down all the mischief, misery, and sin, that has resulted from the mixed marriage of believers and unbelievers! If such a volume were written, it would take more than a lifetime to read it. But it is written, it will be read; for when time shall be no more—when it is too late to correct the wrong or make amends for our mistakes—we shall see, in the clearest light, what have been the fearful consequences of such unhallowed connections.

I know you think that you will be the exception! But don’t fool yourself – no one is. To be the exception would mean that God’s Word has cease being alive, powerful and predictable (2 Cor. 6:14-18).  When the last breath is taken and history stands no more, these words will forever stand, “God is true and every man a liar” (Rom. 3:4).

If you are living with a boyfriend or girlfriend who is not a believer, you are already in deep bondage and heading for real time disaster. Getting out of such a relationship especially if sex has already been occurring is next to impossible. Your only hope is a miracle from God. You need to be delivered. Pray that God steps in and awakens you of your situation and then comes to your aid. By yourself, you will continue to do what you are doing until you are broken beyond belief.

If you like someone who is a non-believer, then pray for the person salvation and wait patiently on God to show you His will regarding the person. Remember, as long as such a person remains unsaved, that person is NEVER the will of God for your life. Don’t rush a head of God thinking that you can work out your own happy and successful destiny. If you think that, the devil has you right where he wants you.

You may know someone who married a person who wasn’t a Christian who later became one and their marriage has turned out wonderful. This may be true, but you do not know the hidden repercussions that occurred. The end never justifies the means. Just the fact that you are thinking of such and using it as an example that there are exceptions proves my point.  Many will try and many will fail over one example.

As a single believer, remember, you are free to marry whomever you choose, as long as he or she also is a committed believer. And do not settle for a mere profession of faith. Be doubly sure that the person you marry loves God with all his or her heart and is truly saved. Look for the fruit of the Spirit – a change life and heart, and don’t settle for anything less, like hearing the right words in a person’s profession of faith.

Now go and with God’s help, find your soul-mate! Just be sure that before you attach yourself to a person as a soul-mate, you know for certain that such a person already has his or her soul attached to the Lord.  This way, you too can look forward to celebrating your wedding anniversaries in creative and thankful ways, since you did it right in the beginning!

Can Faith Move Mountains?

Question: Can faith move mountains?

In Matthew 21, Jesus said, “if you have faith, and do not doubt. . .if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ it shall happen” (v. 21).

Jesus is not talking about the literal removal of mountains if we should ask it in prayer. Of course, with the Lord, there are always exceptions because He can do whatever He wants when He wants and through whom He chooses to work through. But the over riding principle here is simply this: “No object in life, no matter how large, would be impossible for God to take away.”

From where the disciples were standing from the slopes of the Mount of Olives, the Dead Sea would be visible, which would make Jesus’ illustration more vivid to His disciples. Thus moving mountains would be a figure of speech for doing what would be virtually impossible, for men, but not for the Lord.

Let me also add a couple of qualifying notes to consider. First, when praying for a mountain size obstacle to be removed from your path or out of your life, it must be in the will of God (1 John 5:14).  Praying outside of the will of God won’t move even the smallest of objects. Second, the faith that is used to pray for such a huge request comes from God. Jesus is not describing people who are able to generate a truck load of positive thinking. He is saying that the source (God alone) and the object (faith in God), even if a person’s faith is the size of a mustard seed (cf. Matt. 17:20), will have the power and potential to do the humanly impossible. Faith that comes from God will help clear up any doubts.

D you want this kind of faith that’s grounded strong in its source (God)? Then you need to do what Romans 10:17 says: “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the Word of Christ.” You have to make the time daily to be listening to God through His Word and also make the time to listen to the Words of Christ as it is proclaim from your own home church.

When a huge impossible to move obstacle comes into your life, you may have waited too long for God to remove it because your faith is weak and plagued with doubts. You will then scramble to attend church, read your bible, not to build a love relationship with the Lord, but to try to acquire enough faith in God to remove your mountain. Then if the Lord should remove it from your path, you will go back to being how you were before the mountain popped into your life.

Get close to God now when things are going well, and don’t do it only when you simply have ran out of all other options.

Principles of Successful Business from Proverbs

Principles of Successful Business from Proverbs
By Gregory Koukl
divider

Principle #1: Exercise complete dependence on God.
( 3:5-7 )   Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes, fear the Lord, turn away from evil.
( 16:3 )   Commit your works unto the Lord and your plans will be established.
( 22:1 )  A good name is to be more desired than great riches.

Principle #2: Work hard and stick to it, don't let laziness or sleep rob you of success.
WORK HARD:
( 13:11b ) The one who gathers by labor increases (wealth).
( 27:18 ) He who tends the fig tree will eat its fruit.
( 12:11 ) He who tills the land will have plenty of bread, but he who pursues vain things will have poverty in plenty.
( 28:19 ) He who tills the land will have plenty of food, but he who follows empty pursuits will have poverty in plenty.
( 18:19 ) He also who is slack in his work is brother to him to destroys.
( 21:25-26 ) The desire of the sluggard puts him to death, for his hands refuse to work. All day long he is craving while the righteous gives and does not hold back.
STICK TO IT:
( 12:24 ) The hand of the diligent will rule but the slack hand will be put to forced labor.
( 12:27 ) A slothful man does not roast his prey, but the precious possession of a man is diligence.
( 10:4 ) Poor is he who works with a negligent hand, but the hand of the diligent makes rich.
DON'T BE LAZY:
( 19:15 ) Laziness casts into a deep sleep and an idle man will suffer hunger.
( 22:13 ) The sluggard says, "There is a lion outside. I shall be slain in the streets."
( 10:26 ) Like vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, so is the lazy one to those who send him.
( 30:15 ) The leech has two daughters, "Give", "Give"....
GET UP !
( 20:13 ) Do not love sleep, lest you become poor. Open your eyes and you will be satisfied with food.
( 6:9-11 ) How long will you lie down, oh sluggard? When will you rise from your sleep? "A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest" -- and your poverty will come in like a vagabond and your need like an armed man. (see also 24:33-34)

Principle #3: Exercise honesty and uprightness in all business dealings.
DISHONESTY OFFENDS GOD:
( 11:1 ) A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is His delight.
( 20:23 ) Differing weights are an abomination to the Lord, and a false scale is not good.
( 16:11 ) A just balance and scales belong to the Lord, all the weights of the bag are his concern.
( 20:10 ) Differing weights and differing measures, both of them are abominable to the Lord.
DISHONESTY is BAD BUSINESS:
( 10:2a ) Ill-gotten gains do not profit.
( 13:11a ) Wealth obtained by fraud dwindles.
( 15:27a ) He who profits illicitly troubles his own house.
( 19:22b ) It is better to be a poor man than a liar....
( 20:17 ) Bread obtained by falsehood is sweet to a man, but afterward his mouth will be filled with gravel.
( 21:6 ) The getting of treasure by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapor, the pursuit of death.
( 28:16b ) He who hates unjust gain will prolong his days.

Principle #4: Wise planning provides long term stability.
( 21:5 ) The plans of the diligent lead surely to advantage, but everyone who is hasty comes surely to poverty.
LOOK to the LORD in YOUR PLANNING:
( 16:9 ) The mind of a man plans his way but the Lord directs his steps.
( 21:31 ) The horse is prepared for the day of battle, but the victory belongs to the Lord.
SOW TIMELY to REAP BOUNTIFULLY:
( 6:6-8 ) Go to the ant, oh sluggard, observe her ways and be wise, which having no chief, officer or ruler, prepares her food in the summer and gathers her provision in harvest.
( 30:25 ) The ants are not strong folk, but they prepare their food in the summer.
( 20:4 ) The sluggard does not plow after the autumn, so he begs during the harvest and has nothing.
ORGANIZE YOUR EFFORTS:
( 24:27 ) Prepare your work outside and make it ready for yourself in the field. Afterwards, then build your house.
( 27:23-24a ) Know well the condition of your flocks and pay attention to your herds, for riches are not forever....
( 30:27 ) The locusts have no king, yet all of them go out in ranks.
BE A LEARNER:
( 24:4 ) By knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.

Principle #5: Be aware of both the advantages and disadvantages of wealth.
( 30:8-9 ) Give me neither poverty nor riches. Feed me with the food that is my portion lest I be full and deny Thee and say ,"Who is the Lord?" or lest I be in want and steal and profane the name of my God.
RICHES can GIVE YOU FAVOR and OPPORTUNITY:
( 19:4 ) Wealth adds many friends, but a poor man is separated from his friends.
( 19:7 ) All the brothers of a poor man hate him. How much more do his friends go far from him? He pursues them with words, but they are gone.
( 14:20 ) The poor is hated even by his neighbor, but those who love the rich are many.
( 10:15 ) The rich man's wealth is his fortress. The ruin of the poor is their poverty.
RICHES can PROVIDE a FALSE HOPE:
( 11:28 ) He who trusts in his riches will fall.
( 18:11 ) A rich man's wealth is his strong city and like a high wall in his own imagination.
RICHES can be TEMPORARY and FLEETING:
( 23:4-5 ) Do not weary yourself to gain wealth, cease from your consideration of it. When you set your eyes on it, it's gone. For wealth certainly makes itself wings, like an eagle, that flies toward the heavens.
RICHES can breed EGOTISM and ARROGANCE:
( 18:23 ) The poor man utters supplications but the rich man answers roughly.

Principle #6: Generosity leads to financial success.
GIVE to the LORD:
( 3:9-10 ) Honor the Lord from your wealth, and from the first of all your produce, so your barns will be filled with plenty and your vats overflow with new wine.
GIVE to OTHERS:
( 11:25 ) The generous man will be prosperous and he who waters will himself be watered.
( 19:17 ) He who is gracious to a poor man lends to the Lord and He will repay him for his good deed.
( 11:24a ) There is one who scatters yet increases all the more.
( 19:16 ) Many will entreat the favor of a generous man and every man is a friend to him who gives gifts.

Principle #7: Avail yourself frequently of wise counsel.
( 15:22 ) Without consultation, plans are frustrated, but with many counselors they succeed.
( 20:18 ) Prepare plans by consultation and make war by wise guidance.
( 11:14 ) Where there is no guidance, the people fall, but in the abundance of counselors, there is victory.
( 24:6 ) By wise guidance you will wage war, and in the abundance of counselors, there is victory.

Principle #8: Act on each opportunity presented you. Don't wait or procrastinate.
( 10:5 ) He who gathers in summer is a son who acts wisely, but he who sleeps in harvest is a son who acts shamefully.
( 14:23 ) In all labor there is profit, but mere talk leads only poverty.
( 26:15 ) The sluggard buries his hand in the dish. He is weary of bringing it to his mouth again.
( 19:24 ) The sluggard buries his hand in the dish and will not even bring it back to his mouth.
Miscellaneous:
PAY your BILLS and your TAXES:
( 11:24 ) There is one who withholds what is justly due, but it results only in want.
BEWARE of CREDIT:
( 22:7 ) The rich rules over the poor and the borrower become the lender's slave.
DISCERN PROPER and IMPROPER ADVANTAGE:
( 22:16 ) He who oppresses the poor to make much for himself, or who gives to the rich, will only come to poverty.
PURSUE EXCELLENCE:
( 22:29 ) Do you see a man who is skilled in his work? He will stand before kings.

What Should Be in Our Hearts

I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you – Psalm 119:11

In May 2011, the United Kingdom celebrated a royal wedding. Prince William and his bride Catherine Middleton wed amidst pomp and circumstance that reminded many of William’s parents. In 1981, the marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Diana drew unprecedented publicity. Viewers watched a “fairy tale” marriage that began with a horse-drawn carriage. Unfortunately, the union ended with allegations of cheating, depression, divorce, and a tragic death. The “fairy tale” crumbled before our eyes.

Sin has a way of doing this. Couples often have a fairy tale wedding and reception only to end in a bitter divorce. Churches will split over sin. Families will break apart and many will not even gather on the holidays even when years have passed. Just the other day, I heard of another shooting at a major university on the Mainland. Two people had their lives cut short and many others now have to live with emotional scars.

For the believer, there is an answer: Internalizing the Word is a believer's best weapon to defend against encroaching sin. He does not make us holy against our will or without our cooperation. Someone has wisely said, "The best book in the world is the Bible. The best place to put it is in the heart. The best reason for putting it there is that it saves us from sinning against God."

Many people believe that this verse only means that Scripture should be memorized. I think memorizing God's Word is a wonderful thing, but some of the meanest little brats I have seen in Sunday school were the ones who could stand up and quote one hundred verses of Scripture. When the psalmist wrote, "Thy word have I hid in mine heart," I think he meant, "I obey it." That is the important thing. It is a wonderful thing to be able to stand up and by rote recite verse after verse- I'm not criticizing that; I'm in favor of Scripture memorization programs- but we also need to obey the Word. That is what the psalmist means by hiding it in your heart.

I challenge you to consider memorizing at least a couple of verses a week and begin to apply them. It’s sad to me that we are living in a time when believers no longer make this a part of their spiritual practice because it’s a wonderful thing to do. Write verses that particularly speak to you on 3x5-inch cards, pack them around with you—and before you know it, you’ll have a heart full of the Word and a life that reflects it.

God Is Looking For a New Generation

I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands – Psalm 119:10

If you plan to vacation in a new city and are looking for a hotel, you probably read travel reviews. Websites like Hotels.com and Travelocity offer photos, maps, and reviews about specific properties. Some are scathing: “This hotel is nothing like the pictures. It was the smallest room I have ever stayed in!” Travelers use these reviews to protect themselves from deceptive hotel ads that do not live up to their promises.

The writer of this Psalm is making a promise that he hopes to live up to – “I will seek the Lord with all my heart.” Have you made such a promise? Are you living up to your promise? Do you get up early in the morning or stay up late at night when you are so tired just to spend the time you promised to seek the Lord?

God is looking for a “Generation of Seekers.” Those who seek the Lord personally will also throw their heart over the line in serving the Lord. You show me a person whose heart is in his serving and I will show you a person who truly seeks the Lord! You show me a person who pauses to complain about not having this or there’s not enough time or help, and I will show you a person who does not seek the Lord as the writer of this Psalm has chosen to do.

When a person truly seeks God with all his or her heart, then they will pray, “do not let me stray from your commands.” Not only is God looking for a generation of seekers, but He is also on the lookout for a “Generation of Followers.” It is so easy now and then to go astray from the Lord. It can happen in a subtle way. God knows our heart and He knows when the performance does not match the motive. Often times when we therefore seek the Lord, that is the time God allows us to do a heart check on us to recalibrate back to the Father’s ways and commands.

This blessed state of seeking God the flock of Christ should cherish with godly jealousy. Yet let it be remembered, that daily progress in the heavenly walk is not maintained by yesterday's grace. Humble and dependent prayer must fetch in a fresh supply continually, "O let me not wander from Your commandments." Lord, I feel my heart so prone to wander. My affections are often scattered to the ends of the earth. Unite my heart to fear Your name. Concentrate every thought, every desire, in Yourself, as the one object of attraction.

Special

You are serving the Lord Christ – Col. 3:24 NCV

To whom were these words written to? To bishops and emperors? Not in the slightest. To nobles and princes? Hardly. To kings and those of a royal lineage? Not even. Then to whom?

Peasants, dock workers, merchants, stay-at-home-moms, farmers, field workers, slaves -- every day common folk. People just like us. Nothing special other than we serve the Lord Christ.

But that’s where we need to change our thinking a little. It is precisely because we serve the Lord Christ that makes what we are and do special.

Do you sweep and mop floors at church and clean the bathrooms? You are special! Because you serve the Lord Christ. Do you pass out bulletins and greet people when they come to church? You serve the Lord Christ! Do you work behind the scenes wearing black so as not to bring attention to yourself? You serve the Lord Christ! Do you prepare food and serve it to people in church? You serve the Lord Christ! Do you collect the offering? You serve the Lord Christ.

And it is precisely for that reason and that reason alone, that makes what you do so special.
